Japanese Classhttp://www.stmaryslaidley.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Japanese-Language-Classes.aspxJapanese Class

Nihongo Class

Konnichiwa! This week in Nihongo class the Years 3 and 4 students learned some polite Japanese by watching a video clip and reading flashcards. They were taught how to use Japanese greetings in certain situations. They were also challenged to take part in a greeting activity by talking to as many peers as they could within the 4-minute timeframe. Most of the students were successful and received a wad of 'Tottoro Yen' for their great work. The lesson finished with a counting song of numbers 1-10. The Years 5 and 6 students learned some new vocabulary, which was the 'Days of the Week'.

The students were shown posters and flashcards of the Kanji symbols that correspond to each day of the week (see attached picture). A catchy song, as well as funny phrases, were introduced to help the students remember the symbols and meaning behind each day. We might just have a little karaoke session next lesson to see if the students can remember the song. There is always a meaning, a reason or a story behind many aspects of the Japanese language and if the students can grasp this it can help them master many words. Take up the challenge!!

Word of the Week: suiyoubi = Wednesday

Sayonara. Mr Wilson.

Abrianna S, Madison C and Chloe S joined the team and it was wonderful to see the pride and passion they showed in representing their school. As for the match, LDSS won the toss and elected to bat first. They were restricted to 38 runs from their 18 overs, largely due to some fine fielding and bowling by St Mary's. In the run chase, St Mary's always seemed in control in amassing 90 runs from their allotted overs. There were many standout performers on the day, including some fine hitting by Kyran B, some tight bowling by the Lloyd twins and an impressive debut by Bailey D. However, the game ball winner for this match had to go to Chloe S for becoming the first female (in the last 13 years) to claim a wicket for St Mary's in any cricket side! What a performance! We all look forward to taking on LDSS again this Friday.

Speed Cricket

A highly entertaining pool match between Coolock and MacKillop concluded yesterday, with Coolock recording an unlikely win, defeating MacKillop by 1 run. In the MacKillop innings, Harry Jensen top scored with 27 runs, before being bowled out by a superb Henry 'Meataxe' delivery. Jak S also batted well, registering 19 runs, helping MacKillop post a total of 89.

In reply, Coolock started slow, losing a few early wickets, before recovering strongly. Will N scored 25, while Sammy N batted superbly under intense pressure to steer his side to a famous victory, scoring 23 n.o. Hamish L (MacKillop) took 4 wickets.

The next match starts today, with Duhig against MacKillop, with MacKillop requiring victory to stay alive in the tournament.

Swimming

Congratulations to Jack M and Gemma C who have been selected as our first ever Western Ranges representatives to contest the Met West Championships at Chandler. Gemma will participate in the 50m F/S, while Jack will contest the 100m BST. Good Luck!

APRE Newshttp://www.stmaryslaidley.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Our-Lady-of-the-Rosary-Mass.aspxAPRE News
PROJECT COMPASSION

During Lent, our school will be acknowledging the importance of raising much needed funds for those less fortunate than ourselves through Caritas Australia's annual Lenten appeal called Project Compassion. This organisation provides much needed funds for those who are less fortunate than themselves.

This year the theme is “A Just Future". As Pope Francis said, “Cultivate with love the seeds of goodness, beauty and truth that God sows in every new generation". Through your generosity during Project Compassion this year, you are empowering young people to build a just future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Each class has been distributed a donation box and a poster explaining what the money can be used to purchase. The donations made don't need to be large amounts as loose change can go a long way. Your child's teacher will be talking to their students how they can demonstrate the Mercy Value of compassion by giving generously towards this appeal.

Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of the Catholic community and caring supporters throughout Australia to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Project Compassion demonstrates how love for our neighbours can transform lives this year.

If families wish to donate to this cause please send along your donation to your child's classroom.

HAVE YOU SHARED A 'CUP OF MERCY' TODAY?

Over the next couple of weeks, I challenge you to ask your child/children how many times they have shared their 'cup of mercy' with someone and how did they share it.

During this month we are filling our 'cups of mercy' with the mercy value of compassion. We are asking students to help someone in need, give a smile to someone whose day needs brightening up, lend a helping hand where they can, greet each other with respect, play nicely on the playground.

Therefore, when asking about your child/children's day, see if they can identify where they have shared their 'cup of mercy' through the value of compassion.

PARISH SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM

In the coming weeks (if you have not already) the Parish will be contacting our Catholic families who have children eligible for the Parish Sacramental Program (Confirmation, Eucharist or Penance).
