We hope as an administration team that you take the time to answer this survey as it provides our school and diocese with informative data that helps shape our future and yearly directions. If you have any concerns, questions or did not receive it, please do not hesitate to contact me.</p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Today, on 15 August the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, "having completed her course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory".</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Although defined as an article of faith by Pope Pius XII just over half a century ago, the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven has been accepted from back to the earliest of Christian times.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The Assumption signals the end of Mary's earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary's body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">For this reason, we use different words to describe each event. One is the Ascension of Christ and the other, the Assumption of Mary.</p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>LOST PROPERTY</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">The lost property basket is still overflowing with unnamed winter clothing, hats and other school items. If you know that your child is missing something, please come and have a look in the basket outside the school office.</p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>PRAYER FOR RAIN</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">God of compassion, we wait and watch for your gift of rain to water the soil and make the barren land come alive again. We wait and watch for the gift of salvation to free us from hatred, greed and fear so that we may live again as people of faith, hope and love. We make this prayer in the name of our Saviour who comes to be with us. In the past week in Japanese class the Years 3 and 4 students revised some of the learning in the unit, 'Who is in my Family', as they missed last week's Japanese lesson. With the help of flashcards and a piece of Japanese dialogue, the students soon recalled some of the key terms and names of various family roles. Once some revision was completed, the Years 3 and 4 students were shown a slideshow introducing them to a Japanese family. The students were challenged to determine the make-up of this family by responding to the question, 'Dare desuka?' which means, Who is this? To practise this new Japanese phrase the students were asked to identify the person shown on the flashcard as well as going around the room and responding to my questions about their classmates. A funny clip was also used to quiz the students on Japanese family members.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The Year 5 students used their lesson to catch up on previous lessons missed and to fall in line with where the Year 6 students are at with their Japanese learning. To help the Year 5 students achieve this, our Japanese student visitors joined them during the class and assisted them greatly. Remembering that the Year 5 students are studying the unit, 'Getting ready for School', we thought it would be a great idea to ask the Japanese students how they go to school and how long it takes them, etc. Our students were very surprised by some of the answers they heard. These discussions helped put things into perspective for our students' learning of this unit. Some of the Japanese students volunteered to help teach the phrase, 'Dare no desuka' (Who's is this?), through role-playing and easy explanations. Our visitors also used flashcards to describe and teach the various items they pack in their school bags and take to school on a daily basis. Again, this was an invaluable experience for our students. In the Seniors, we went down narrowly 31-26, with Lizzy Medford creating many opportunities, with some strong possessional play, while captain Max Muirhead provided good leadership and support. Lizzy, Max and Jackson Lloyd led the goal scoring four points each.</p><p>In a highly entertaining juniors match, St. Mary's also went down narrowly 24-22. Rohan Valencius was highly dominant with the ball in possession, and Lucas Freeman defended well, stealing the ball on numerous occasions. Danthy Nguyen also proved hard to stop and refused to give up. We now look forward eagerly to our next round of matches.</p><p><strong>Rugby League</strong></p><p>Our Senior and Junior Rugby League Teams will play LDSS in their final local games for the season this Friday at the Rec Grounds. A reminder that permission forms are to be handed in asap.</p><p>The Annual Cahill-Henry Cup games with OLGC Gatton are fast approaching, in what is shaping up to be another fantastic exhibition of football between the two schools. After St. Mary's claimed the cup in 2017, the team is eager to repeat that success in 2018. Match 1 will take place at the Rec Grounds on August 24, and the return match at Cahill Park on August 31. Both games will kick-off at approx. 3:30pm. We would love once again to have a big crowd in attendance to cheer the Laidley side on.</p><p><strong>Cricket</strong></p><p>Congratulations to Harry Jensen and Henry Shepley who have been selected in the Western Rangers Cricket Team to contest the Met West Championships. Well done!</p><p><strong>Other Important Sports Dates v OLGC</strong></p><p>A reminder that our Senior Soccer Team will play OLGC Gatton on Friday, September 14, and this year we are also excited to include a netball match, with the senior netballers also playing OLGC on September 14. More info in the coming weeks.</p><p><strong>Speed Soccer and Netball Carnival</strong></p><p>This annual sports cluster day sees schools from across the Laidley Valley compete in soccer and netball competitions at the Rec Grounds. All students from Years 3 to 6 will be involved and will be nominating during PE lessons. </p><p> </p>
