Senior Rugby League Report

Our Senior Rugby League Team participated in the 3 Way Meet between Hatton Vale and Laidley District last Friday. In an impressive first match against HVSS, St. Mary's began well, with some charging runs by Aiden R, Izzy H and Max M. Captain Kyran B led from the front in defence with several bone-rattling tackles. Kristian G scored a great try. The second half saw us move the ball out wide more often, resulting in several line breaks, including a great winger's catch by Luke T out wide, however our defence in the middle let us down at times as our forwards began to tire. In what proved to be a tight game, at full time both teams had scored three tries, with Hatton Vale running out victors 18-16 with a 100% conversion rate. Kruize D caught several high balls and ran some powerful kick returns.

The second match against LDSS proved to be an entertaining fixture, with each and every one of our players giving it their best against a much larger pack. After LDSS opened the scoring, St. Mary's dug deep to reply with some Hayden G excellence from dummy half. The score line continued to see-saw, and some big hits ensured again from forwards Aiden R and Braydan S. Vinnie G, showed determination with several powerful runs, before Kyran B crashed over the top of the North pack for a try to level the scores at 12-all. Unfortunately LDSS crossed for a try in the last minute of the match to seal a cruel 18-12 victory. Special mention also to Jack M who played gallantly in his first ever Rugby League match, and also to V/C Jackson L who kicked a great goal under extreme pressure.

We thank all the parents who turned up to support and help with training/running the water, this was greatly appreciated, also to Laidley Lions RLFC who set up the fields for us. This Friday we look forward to a rematch against LDSS. Good Luck!

Junior Rugby League Report

The St. Mary's junior rugby league team ventured over to the Rec Grounds last Friday to take part in the annual 3-way Gala Sports Day. They were all very excited to finally get a game under their belts after training very hard at school for the past 6 weeks. The first game saw them take on the might of Hatton Vale State School. They played their hearts out until the final whistle and unfortunately went down by 2 points in a cliff-hanger. The Hatton Vale coach heaped special praise on our side for the way they performed as a playing unit for the very first time. The experience gained from this first game was invaluable, as they then took on a developing side from Laidley District State School. Again, it was another fabulous game of footy with St Mary's getting the chocolates this time by a couple of tries. Our students should be very proud of how they played and the sportsmanship they showed on this day. Special mention goes to Rohan V for his inspirational captaincy on the day, along with Samson N, Aliya H, Aaron L and Will S who had great games in the St Mary's jersey. The coaches were also very proud of the Year 3 boys who represented St Mary's in rugby league for the very first time, including Darcy M who had his first ever game of footy. What a performance. We now look forward to honing our skills this Friday in a very special intra-school hit out against each other. Should be fun.
